Training for the Unplanned
On Saturday, April 25, 2026, Wilton CERT conducted a training session focused on unplanned deployment procedures. The training was designed both for new CERT members and as a refresher for experienced volunteers.
To create a realistic scenario, a notification was sent through the Everbridge emergency callout system, clearly indicating that it was a drill and instructing participants to assemble at the Wilton Fire House.
Wilton CERT is frequently activated by the Town of Wilton’s Emergency Management Director to assist during local emergencies. These incidents may include structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, and road closures caused by downed trees or wires. In such situations, CERT members play an important role by establishing detours and safely directing both pedestrian and vehicular traffic around affected areas.
The training began with a review of preparatory procedures, including the equipment required prior to deployment. Participants then moved across the street to the back parking lot of Our Lady of Fatima Church, where a simulated Route 7 road closure exercise took place.
A key component of the training included reviewing radio communications—an essential element of any deployment—as well as techniques for effective traffic management while staffing a post. This type of scenario represents one of the more complex situations CERT members may encounter during unplanned deployments.
Several experienced CERT members led the training, emphasizing safety while sharing detailed and practical guidance drawn from years of field experience. Weather conditions added to the realism of the exercise; what began as a partly cloudy, cold day became even more challenging with periods of rain.
While unplanned deployments require a higher level of skill and time commitment and may not be suitable for every volunteer, the training proved to be a valuable learning experience for all participants. By reinforcing the importance of public safety during emergency road closures, the session provided meaningful, hands-on preparation for real-life situations.
